Día de Muertos in Los Cabos

Dia de Los Muertos is Mexico’s national holiday which personifies the celebration by families and friends to remember loved ones who have passed away and commemorate their lives in prayer and party and is most commonly recognized by the painted skulls which symbolize its importance to the history and traditions of Mexican culture. Throughout most of the Republic of Mexico, November 1 is a day set aside to honor children and infants, (Día de los Inocentes and Día de los Angelitos), whereas deceased adults are honored on November 2 (“Day of the Dead”).
During these 2 to 4 days long festivities, Mexican citizens here and on American soil go to cemeteries, building private altars containing photos, foods and memorabilia, of the dearly departed and often times will take to cleaning and decorating the grave-sites with offerings which include orange Mexican marigolds called cempasúchil (An Aztec Nahuatl term for “twenty flowers”).
The Department of Culture (Departamento de Cultura in San Jose del Cabo) first organized and incorporated an Altar Contest in 2009 and an artistic festival for Day of the Dead in San Jose’s main square.
Halloween weekend as everyone considers it now, is filled with costume contest events in San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo complete with fun drink specials. Some of the more popular establishments like Mandala, Baja Junkie and Squid Roe have something planned for the holiday year after year.
“It’s a unique Mexican event that truly captures the spirit of the country, ” noted Pahko Moreno, a graphics design artist. “I think it’s the one holiday that has given fame and popularity to skeletons and the way they’re represented in humorous ways makes it a fun time in Mexico.”

The Day of the Dead (el Día de los Muertos), is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink and celebration. A blend of Mesoamerican ritual, European religion and Spanish culture, the holiday is celebrated each year from October 31- November 2. While October 31 is Halloween, November 1 is “el Dia de los innocents,” or the day of the children, and All Saints Day. November 2 is All Souls Day or the Day of the Dead. According to tradition, the gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31 and the spirits of children can rejoin their families for 24 hours. The spirits of adults can do the same on November 2.
