A few years ago, a local Cabo San Lucas writer said that, ”Valentine’s Day romance, in and of itself, has become a specialty in Los Cabos.” The natural beauty of this Southern Baja California Region, along with its wonderful, warm beaches and iconic Land’s End Arch rock formation, all make for an alluring, serene, romantic vacation getaway. Magical, and memorable evenings of love by the sea, have grown steadily over the years.The Valentines name dates back to the Christian priest who defied Roman Emperor Claudius II (AD 268-270) decree that no young man of fighting age could be married so they could focus on the task of being soldiers. St. Valentine broke that edict by marrying them in secret. When this clandestine activity was discovered by Claudius, St. Valentine was jailed and ultimately killed on February 14 for the treasonous action of converting men to Christianity.
While imprisoned, St. Valentine continued his ministry of the Gospel of Christ to everyone he could, including his jailers. One of the Roman guards watching over the bold priest is said to have asked St. Valentine to pray for his blind, adopted daughter. After the girl had been healed, she received a signed, hand delivered note from her jailer father ”on the down low” which read, ”From your Valentine.”
The modern tradition of exchanging love-proclaiming cards or mushy love notes now consists of people ”openly” giving their loved ones, the chocolates and flowers associated with February 14, St. Valentine’s Day. A date which has immortalized a man of the cloth who encouraged others to recognize the truly unselfish love of Christ and his servant apostles who died so the Gospel of the Lord could be spread unto the non-Christian masses.
One Mexican tradition that has been seemingly lost over the years, amidst the romantic wave of these modern cyberspace dominated times, is the old wooing and courting best symbolized with an old-school Mariachi song. Rarely is anyone spotted serenading their loved one with guitar in hand, or at least having someone sing and play nearby, while he proclaims his undying love.
But there’s no denying in this modern era of speed dating, online social networks and dating apps, that Los Cabos is one very cool place to spend your Valentine’s Day with that special someone and soak in the wonderfully unique aspects of what makes this Baja California resort, a romantic paradise. Not only falling further in love with your soul-mate, but also with the romantic City of Cabo itself. When it comes to celebrating Valentines Day in Los Cabos, most single visitors have plenty of places to choose from, during Cupid’s celebration of love. In San Lucas, tourists can meander on over to Medano Beachand partake in all the wild festivities that have made the Mango Deck barso popular. The multitude of attractive bikini clad females and handsome shirtless men that occupy any of the four beach-front bars of Medano Beach during the afternoons of either Mango Deck, The Office, Billygan’sor Baja Cantina, are reason enough that available singles will have the time of their lives on Valentine’s Day in San Lucas.
At night, since Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday this 2020 year, any able-bodied person can dance and sip alcoholic beverages at any of the most popular and famous nightclubs that are all located within a one block radius of each other. Places like Cabo Wabo, Rips, Jungle Bar, Giggling Marlin, Cabo Blue, RockStone, Pink Kitty, Hard Rock Cafe, Mandala, Baja Junkie, and the world famous, El Squid Roe. In San Jose del Cabo, spending an afternoon on the Marinato enjoy food and beverages at any of the chic restaurants and bars, or just relax at La Playita beach, is an option in the quieter, Los Cabos city. The night life in San Jose del Cabohas greatly expanded during the past half decade.
In the Colonial downtown area of SJDC, the live music scene comes to life at places like the Tropicana Restaurant and Cantina, where there are men and women aplenty every weekend, dancing away to cumbia, salsa, and meringue; which they also do at nearby, Don Sanchez Cantina and a nightclub called Ya ya ya. Not far from there, is Baja Brewing Company, which offers home made micro beers of light to amber dark flavors, featuring live bands playing classic rock and roll music, and is found down the street and around the corner from the city’s landmark Catholic Church.

Not very many Mexicans in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur nor The Republic of Mexico used to celebrate Christmas in the traditional American sense, but slowly, over the past decade, Christmas trees have found their way into Mexican homes; in which families have come to embrace the celebration with the birth of Christ with gift wrapped presents placed under the tree.
On Saturday, December 21, 2019, Cabo Blue sailing boat charter tours offers an ocean Sea of Cortez cruise parade that takes place between 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM, and includes drinks and food. On Christmas Day Wednesday, December 25, Flora Farms in San Jose del Cabo, hosts a Christmas Brunch that takes place between the hours of 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. For Christmas and New Years, between December 16, 2019 and January 15, 2020, The Viceroy Hotel Los Cabos, is offering an open to the public ice skating rink on their synthetic ice, from the hours of 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM. This year also celebrates the 3rd Annual delivery of presents and donations to the children that reside in the impoverished Cabo San Lucas Gastelum community. Sano Plate by Stephanie Mirich are fellow organizers traditionally designate a drop off spot for toys and donations between the dates of December 7th – December 21st. People are also encouraged to donate money towards this noteworthy cause if they don’t have time to shop.
Last year, organizers were able to raise enough money and donations to ensure that every child walked away with toys from Santa Claus.
Organizers also emphasize that toys do not even have to be brand new, and the group will gladly accept slightly used toys and clothes for young children, older kids and teens and adults. For monetary donations please contact Stephanie Mirich via Facebook. Organizers deliver all donations on Christmas Eve afternoon at 3:00 PM. Individuals and their families are also invited to attend the toys and gifts delivery day, and bask in a heart warming and humbling experience.

During Thanksgiving week in Mexico, November the 20th, is recognized as a National Holiday with the traditional closing of banks and government offices. The date holds a special place in every Mexican’s heart as the beginning of the Mexican Revolution of 1910 in which the poorest of people rose up and took arms against the 34 year reign of corruption and subjugation under the the rule of Dictator/President, Porfirio Diaz; who was in power from 1876 to 1910.
Diaz used his paramilitary army of Rurales, to keep order in the country side, while fixing elections and having all opposition jailed or executed at the hands of his Federales, claiming that Mexico was not ready to rule itself and that only he knew what was best for the country; enforcing his beliefs with a strong and blood-tainted hand. During this time of his presidency, the wealthy stayed rich and got richer while the poor remained as poor as before, if not worse.
Francisco I. Madero, Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata are the three most famous figures associated with Mexican history as the core group of men who went on to launch the ultimate rebellion against Díaz, known as the Mexican Revolution; also poetically referred to as, ”The Wind That Swept Mexico”. The Civil Revolution of Mexico lasted from November 20, 1910 and remained a decade long struggle for equal rights and freedom, ending in 1920. This armed conflict is often categorized as the most important socio-political event in the country of Mexico and one of the greatest upheavals of the 20th century. The end result being, the Mexican Constitution of 1917 at the expense of over one million lives.
And Thanksgiving is also major ordeal in Los Cabos, where many local restaurants offer delicious turkey dinners with all the fixings, most of them priced at between $25 – $40 US dollars per person. The 3 mile race begins at Plaza Amelia Wilkes and winds its way up towards the new El Comer shopping center, where the finish line ends at the junior high school located directly behind El Comer.

The Halloween night celebration in Cabo San Lucas, does not involve parents walking their costume-wearing children through the various nearby neighborhood streets of their home; going door to door and saying that historically American traditional phrase every candy-loving kid knows by heart, ”Trick or Treat”, as they hold out their bags, buckets, and/or pillow cases as they strive to fill them up with as many sweets as possible.
Instead, a constant flow of moms, and dads and their little muchachitos and muchahtitas (young boys and girls) converge on the downtown streets of San Lucas and go door to door to as many small businesses who have made this festive street party an unforgettable Cabo San Lucas tradition. Instead of Trick or Treat, the thousands of happy young children of Cabo annually say “Happy Halloween” or just simply ”Halloween”, as they extend their bag, bucket or pillow case; eagerly awaiting their candy.
Owner of Cabo Cantina, Don Weis, originally from the Northern California San Francisco Bay Area, has by far set the highest bar in celebrating Halloween with the Cabo San Lucas locals as both he and his staff, along with several volunteers, hand out several pounds of candy year after frighteningly fun year. General Manager Maddie Corona has coordinated an assembly-line of several six foot tables that begin several feet from the street level entrance to Cabo Cantina, in which volunteers; dressed in costume, hand out candy to the hundreds upon hundreds of children that are fortunate enough to cash in on the candy giving bounty the charitable owner Don Weis, and his enthusiastic staff and volunteer friends happily gives out year after year.
Nearby Tanga Tanga Sports Bar, has also been a generous candy giving contributor that has become the downtown Cabo San Lucas Halloween spectacle. The very street along Marina Boulevard are closed to traffic on Halloween night as parents and their children enjoy the freedom of roaming along the busy thoroughfare, safely taking their children from business to business, “Trick or Treating” or in Southern Baja California Mexico’s case, “Happy Halloweening”.
