The 3rd Annual Todos Santos Music Festival

Hotel California and Peter Buck are the big names behind the Todos Santos Music Festival, which returns January 16-18 and 22–25, 2014. The annual event, founded three years ago by former R.E.M. guitarist Buck, has quickly become a fixture on the local entertainment calendar, drawing top-flight talent to the coastal pueblo mágico, and in the process raising money for youth-oriented charities supported by the Palapa Society of Todos Santos.

Peter-Buck-todos-santos-500“We are fortunate that such great musicians are willing to donate their time to join me in adding to the cultural vibrancy of the town and, at the same time, in giving back to this special community,” Buck said.

The Todos Santos Music Festival was founded by former R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck.

The festival will feature seven days of live music over two weekends, with performers appearing at two venues—Hotel California and the town plaza in Todos Santos. Top draws at this 2014’s event include Buck, the Southern band Drivin’ ‘N’ Cryin’, reunited ’80s alt rockers Dream Syndicate, and Mexican favorites Torreblanca, and Twin Tones. The TSMF line-up has been personally curated by Buck, and for the first time will also feature a local music showcase promoting up-and-coming acts from Baja California Sur.

The highly anticipated musical extravaganza kicks off the festival season in Todos Santos, with art and film festivals to follow in February. Plus, 2014 marks the opening of the Todos Santos Writers Workshop. The new center for creative writing will launch its first writing sessions contemporaneous with this year’s music festival.

Six of the seven nights of live music at the 2014 festival will be presented in the courtyard of the legendary Hotel California in Todos Santos.

todos-santos-music-festivalA week of “Tuning Up Your Muse” themed craft workshops are scheduled from January 20–25 in the courtyard gardens of the historic Casa Dracula, a landmark 19th-century hacienda.

Participants will work under the guidance of professional writers and editors, and produce new fiction and non-fiction inspired by the festival (the best of which will read aloud at a special music festival event). Workshop registration costs $100 per person, with the first $1000 donated to the Palapa Society of Todos Santos. For more information on writing programs and seminars, email hola@todossantoswritersworkshopcom.

Seating is limited at the Hotel California, the site for six of the music festival’s seven days of live music, and the only way to reserve access is by purchasing VIP seats for $25. General admission tickets are first come, first serve, and sell for $15. Reserved seats for the final concert at the Town Plaza are $75. For additional ticket information, click here.

Proceeds from the Tour are administered through the Palapa Society, A.C., a non-profit charity, and help children in Todos Santos with art education by providing art supplies and training.  The Palapa Society was founded in 2003 and its overall mission is to provide educational scholarships, as well as medical and environmental programs to benefit the local children and families of Todos Santos.  This is accomplished working in concert with various community entities, and through the efforts of a host of dedicated volunteers.  For more visit their website at palapasociety.orgstudio-tour-Sofia-Vega-Painting

The Tour this year has 38 artists registered including the addition of eight new studios never open in previous years.  It promises to be a unique and rewarding experience.  Participating artists have been working hard to present new and exciting creations to share. You can view a diverse assortment of work from silversmithing to sculpture, photography to painting, ceramics to mural making, and including such mediums as ceramic, mosaics, encaustic, oil and acrylics, pastels and lathe wood turning. studio-tour-Gloria-Ruenitz Also it is fascinating to see the many ways artists carve out places to work, from a garage or a palm covered palapa in their yard, to a formal traditional studio space, all serve to enable the process of making art.

This is the signature event for the majority of artists who form the core of the Todos Santos art colony.  Some of these artists were born here, while others settled in our small village because of its charming historic and cultural atmosphere, its pure light, and the beauty of a tropical setting bounded by the ocean and the surrounding desert.  The Tour is an opportunity to view a wide spectrum how artists interpret living here, and melds their experiences into their unique artistic creations.
