Día de los Niños Héroes, Child Heroes, Heroic Cadets

September 13 – Día de los Niños Héroes – Child Heroes” or “Heroic Cadets
The day honors the heroes of the 1847 Battle of Chapultepec during the Mexican American War.

The Niños Héroes (in English: Boy Heroes), also known as the Heroic Cadets or Boy Soldiers, were six Mexican teenage military cadets. These cadets died defending Mexico at Mexico City’s Chapultepec Castle (then serving as the Mexican Army’s military academy) from invading U.S. forces in the 13 September 1847 Battle of Chapultepec, during the Mexican–American War. One of the cadets, Juan Escutia, wrapped himself with the Mexican flag and jumped from the roof of the castle to keep it from falling into enemy hands.[1] The Niños Héroes are commemorated by a national holiday on September 13.  Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/

Battle of Chapultepec
During the battle, six Mexican military cadets refused to fall back when General Bravo finally ordered retreat and fought to the death. These were teniente (lieutenant) Juan de la Barrera and cadets Agustín Melgar, Juan Escutia, Vicente Suárez, Francisco Márquez and Fernando Montes de Oca, all between the ages of 13 and 19. According to legend, the last of the six, Juan Escutia, grabbed the Mexican flag, wrapped it around himself and jumped off the castle point to prevent the flag from falling into enemy hands. In 1967, Gabriel Flores painted a mural depicting “Los Niños Héroes”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Chapultepec

Día de la Marina, Mexican Navy Day

June 1st – Día de la Marina – Mexican Navy Day
Armada-de-MéxicoThis day is celebrated in all coastal towns, with naval parades and fireworks.  Mexican Navy Day is an official Mexican holiday. The date that Navy Day is celebrated was determined by the fact that on 01 June 1917, for the first time a Mexican merchant vessel, the steamer “Tabasco”,  left the port of Veracruz. The entire crew was composed exclusively of native born Mexicans and captained by Captain Don Rafael H. Izaguirre Castanyares. The correct name of the Mexican Navy is Armada de México.

In 1929 students of the now National Autonomous University of Mexico, went on strike for University Autonomy. They were forced to do this because the politicians at the federal level were using education as a political football for their own gains at the polls. There was a federal election that year and the university and education were being used to further the election of various candidates and political perspectives. The federal government had direct control over the university’s policies and curriculum.

In July 1929 President Emilio Portes Gil recognized the autonomy of education and declared May 23 National Student Day and Plaza de Santo Domingo in Mexico City was called Plaza 23 de Mayo or Plaza of the Student. The university rector, not the Secretary of Education, became the final authority for the university.
